Who's Got the Button?

We've got a fun new challenge as Dirty Girls and Alumni today.  Each month we issue each other a challenge as a fun little mini-reunion.  This month Bev has challenged us to pull out our buttons and use them on our creation.  Restriction - no black!    So I have a little lace and buttons for and the challenge today. 

I used the pretty set from Flourishes called Lace Edges, all stamped in Baja Breeze ink and sponged with baja ink too.  A little pretty satin ribbon underneath and crochet lace overtop, with corduroy buttons and linen thread and it's a pretty and yet simple card.  You could do a whole set of this type of card easily in different colors too.

Who's Got the Button?

She's 13

Today is another Dirty Dozen and Alumni Challenge ...but before I get to the card.  It's a big day, and I just found that I have a lot to say about it.  Feel free to pass by my Mom story to the card if you need to :)

Today is our daughters' 13th Birthday.  Today at 6:20 AM she becomes a teenager.  We threatened to wake her to celebrate LOL!  I just can't believe it's been 13 years.   I had the shocking realization the other day that we probably only have about 5 more years with her at home.  And that realization really hit me.  Normally I'm not the kind of Mom that get's too wistful about passages.  Generally I just feel excited to enter into whatever is next for my kids, excited for them, and excited for us.  And yet today I find myself quite wistful about this passage. 

Where did 13 years go?  She is our eldest...the firstborn, the kid that broke us in as parents :)  There were times when it was a major breaking us in (I mean seriously 10 ear infections in her first 18 months???) and yet there have been many other times where she's let us off SO easy compared to her brothers.  She is an amazing young woman already.  Just an inch away from me in height, with bigger feet than me already.  Incredible intelligence.  True compassion for others, and an authentic walk with God.  Willing to help (most of the time!).  And much of the time really fun to be with :)

But just 5 short years till she's 18...if these past 13 years have flown by, oh my, where will the next 5 go?  Will I have taught her enough?  Will we have prepared her for the world she will enter?  Will she value the things that are most important?  Can I hand over the car keys to her in 3 years?  Is she ready for how to handle heartache and is she ready for how to manage celebration?  Can I teach her to love freely but to guard her heart?  That beauty comes most from the beautiful spirit God has given her inside, not outside.  Will she know that receiving really comes most profoundly from giving? 

...oh so much in store these next 5 years.  I'm so glad that God gave me this little glimpse into how short the time is - so I can appreciate it more, and so I can make the most of it.  It is our joy to be her parents.

Alright - what did I create for this brand-new Teen today? 

Well in our DD/DDA Challenge Jodi challenged us to use Paper Piecing and Fall or Christmas colors. 

I paper pieced this young lady to an inch of her life!  Her blouse, dress, shoes (yes those teeny tiny shoes!) and her shopping bags are paper pieced individually with different selections from the Indian Summer Basic Grey pack.  I colored her skin and hair with copics.   I really wanted the sentiment to run vertically so I used my computer to design a little Teenager sentiment and put it into the Fancy Label. 

Some gems and pearls and some gorgeous Satin ribbon seem to give it that grown up feel too.

Dog Days Dirty Girl Challenge

Oh it's the dog days of summer isn't it? Those last few weeks of the sun giving all it's warmth! How quickly time has gone this summer. It's already August 20th and time for another Dirty Dozen and Alumni challenge over at Splitcoaststampers. I can't believe it's been a year since I finished my term on the Dirty Dozen!


Val challenged us this month to celebrate the dog days of summer. We had to use doggy or related images and sentiments, nothing fuzzy and warm summer colors.


Here's my cute pup...the only dog image I own (gasp!) I'm not a dog person, not because I maybe wouldn't want to be - but because I've always had really bad allergies to dogs/cats etc, (even the supposed non-allergenic ones), and our middle son is the same way. Because of this, I've just never been a furry friend person. But I can appreciate them :) (hey I cried at Marley and Me).


I colored this pampered pup on his fancy schmancy pillow with copic markers. I added Zig Painty gold accents to the pillow, and then added sponging in Crushed Curry and Ruby Red. I had a hard time deciding which pic to use so I'll give you a few views. Above you can see the gold pen and the embossing a big better. Below is actually a better representation of the true colors.

I really love the Spellbinders Frameabilities, this one shows the pretty embossing (I also sponged and added gold accents to the frame). I also gave it some pretty piercing with my Fancy Scallops Pierceabilities, and added gold accents to the designer paper and to the ribbon edges.

Dog Days Dirty Girl Challenge

Dare to Get Dirty!

If you are a Fan Club Member at Splitcoast (and why wouldn't you be :) )....the next few days are a highlight of the year in my opinion. Dirty Girl and Alumni challenges all day today, tomorrow and Saturday. Absolute FUN. It's called Dare to Get Dirty! I know the all the girls have some awesome challenges ahead!

I'm blessed to be a sample maker for my friend Tracy Harp today we served together on the Dirty Dozen for a few months. I won't tell you the details of the challenge, as that's exclusive to Fan Club members, but I will show you what I made.

This is the new Medallion set from SU. I thought it was so elegant looking! Inside the windowed purse are 4 cards and matching envelopes.

I have to say I was very inspired by Val's Note Box tutorial here, (she's SO innovative!) but didn't use her tutorial to do this as I wanted to revamp something slightly different for myself. I may do a tutorial on how to make this project after the DTGD challenges are over, if there's any interest.

Above is the card where I added Crystal effects around the medallion to give it some lovely shine and dimension.

What I love about this project....the classy-ness, how it would be great as a gift, the window in the purse to the cards, and that it's a portable gift like a little purse!

Dare to Get Dirty!

H2O with the Dirty Dozen Girls

Here is is the 20th of the month again... This is the day when the Dirty Dozen Girls & Alumni from SCS work on a challenge together. This month Jami let me be the hostess....so I picked the theme H2O and here's what I challenged the girls with:

A dip in the Lake....the waves on the Ocean, that little Creek down the ravine, the warm rain gently falling, a cold glass of water on a hot day...nothing says Spring and Summer like water.

Challenge Focus: Create a project that has something to do with water, it can be in your stamps, paper, or embellishments. But lets celebrate the happiness of warm weather and refreshing water. Let us know the story behind it too!

Required Element: Watercoloring! If we're doing a water themed project there needs to be some element of watercoloring on your creation.

Restricted Element: If it's H2O that means the two in the equation restricts you to only two embellishments. For example, ribbon and piercing, primas and brads. Focal image shapes like nesties or sizzix die cuts don't count.

Now I have to tell you the story...seeing as this was my month to pick the theme, you'd think I would remember the rules wouldn't you? I finished the card on Monday and put it up on my desk to look at a while. I often do this to make sure it's not missing something...everything looks like it belongs etc. And as I'm looking at it - BAM it hits me! I didn't do the challenge right at all! I knew I wanted to use this stamp set, and I thought...hey why not use Copics...give it some fun vivid color. Not till it was completely done did I realize "IT'S H2O!!!" I said there had to be WATERCOLOR! DUH! Sheesh. I was so mad at myself. And I loved how the colors came out with the copics too.

Then I realized I could save it....I'd re-stamp the image, and just watercolor the little boy (who reminds me so much of my little boys when they play at the beach), and then pop him up. In the end it looks better than before because of the dimension. See his suntanned neck...my boys look so much like that when they're out in the sun.

I added some vellum waves lapping at his feet, sponged sky and sentiment, and gave it some weathering. My two types of embellishments are the Corduroy Brads and the Linen Thread, the rest is all paper :)

H2O with the Dirty Dozen Girls

My Favourites

Anyone else slightly over-committed this week? I'm feeling it for sure. I am throwing a baby shower for my sister-in-law and my niece this weekend and still have to finish the banner with her name, the diaper cake, plus clean my house, help make the food (though my mom is doing a lot of that) and still be a mom, wife...human being! There are many moments where I have to choose to sit back and be still - even if something doesn't get done.

Alright...on to the cards....

Today, I wanted to show you some of things that are my favourites...favourite techniques...styles....stamps...any guesses?

Basically Friends

Today's color challenge (my favourite challenge :) )...was Pink Pirouette, Rose Red and Basic Gray...a really nice contrast between soft and deep colors.

My favourite parts here...cutting and popping up images, sponging, overstamping on designer paper, beautiful embellishements, a little coloring and off center alignment on the card :) (what does that say about me?! lol).

The bird and some of the flowers are popped up. My Rose Red ink pad was really juicy today and I must have gotten some of ink on my fingers (don't you hate that!) and it smudged on the oval panel, so I had to add some creative embellishing with the flowers to cover it up....you can just see it in this closeup. Haven't you heard that saying "mistakes are opportunities for embellishment!"

Mom's Flower Garden

Well this card was supposed to be done yesterday for our 20th of the Month Dirty Girl/Dirty Girl Alumni challenge, but there was just no way I could have accomplished it. Our challenge was to put together our new and old favourites to create for our mom or dad or someone significant to us who lives out a special role like that. The other challenge was that the creation not fulfill any design team committment - it was just for fun!

Well, these are Flourishes stamps, but they are my favourite for this technique...and it was just for fun. I've been thinking for a long time about combining a number of Flourishes Florals in one card like a flower garden. My mom loves flowers, and she has a piece of art in her sewing room with these colors that I've long admired and knew at some point I'd incorporate into a creation.

My favourites here? Well, you're not surprised - it's watercoloring :) my bestest medium, my most favouritist (I'm talking like my 5 year old here). But really, there's nothing that gives me more joy artistically. I also love masking, I love my NEW Sizzix Texturz plates (can you believe I didn't add texture to anything until I got my Big Shot?), I also love sponging to give the paper depth, and I love cutting images to give it the out of the box look. All favourites of mine. Oh yeah...and piercing...a happy card is a pierced card!

Spring Fever!

Welcome to Spring!

I have two great things to show you today...a Dirty Dozen Challenge and a Flourishes Friday Focus, as well as some FUN news at the end...

Dirty Dozen Flashback....have you ever gone back to look at some of your original cards? Well this month the Dirty Girls have! We're doing a fantastic challenge....CASE-ing ourselves! I'm my own Featured Stamper! Our challenge is to go back to one of our oldest cards in our gallery and CASE it...changing three elements. And no restrictions this month. What I love about this challenge is that it shows - everyone starts somewhere! We all grow as stampers!

Here's my original card from June of 2007...

It was a sketch challenge card, the 3rd card I ever made on SCS! ...now keep in mind I had stamped about 3 years before I was brave enough to post on SCS...so I actually still really like this card. I like the monochromatic feel and the pop of burgundy...I will always love Baroque Motifs as a set too. And here's my case:



I kept the basic layout and monochromatic theme, but I did change the set and colors, added a couple of layers, including DP that had been overstamped on, changed how I did the ribbon and added a Sizzlits Tag sentiment.

And for the Friday Focus Card for Flourishes...the wonderful Leslie Miller wants to show you how to showcase your Designer Papers! Combining the designs of decorative paper is a challenge that many stampers often have. How do you do it successfully? This week on the Flourishes Newsletter, Leslie will help us to see the patterns in decorative paper in a whole new and artistic way!

Here is my sample for today


I've combined four different Basic Grey - Urban Prairie papers on this card to give it a very spring feel. The largest pattern on the main card base, moving down in pattern sizes in smaller sections. I think this gives it more balance. I added a cute awning over my daffodils and chicks. My husband said it looks like a little window. The daffodils and chicks were watercolored and some popped up, and I used various sizes of Nestabilities for shape interest.

Spring Fever!

Toonie Tuesday - Dirty Dozen Valentine Challenge

Love Birds



Well, it's the 20th of the month and time for another roundup of the Dirty Dozen girls, current and alumni for a challenge! This month Jodi - Kharmagirl challenged us to make a Valentine creation....Required Element: Texture, Restricted Element: NO RED!


So, I pulled out my precious birds from Flourishes new release *Home Tweet Home* and made some Love Birds.



A few weeks back I played around with this color combination and really liked it (Bravo Burgundy, So Saffron and Kiwi Kiss), so since I couldn't use any RED, I made a very rich but springlike Valentine.


I stamped the birds on watercolor paper and watercolored them and cut them out. Cut out my watercolor frame with my Nestabilities die (and the other two frames as well), then sponged the watercolored piece with Kiwi Kiss and watercolored it as well. And I added a little free-hand watercolored heart between them.


The burgundy is old old DSP, before SU went to double sided DSP, so I haven't got a clue which one it is. I turned the frames in different directions and added some pretty piercing throughout.


So what are my texured items? I scored the So Saffron DSP which I wish you could see better, and I added felt and satin ribbon and a felt flower.



Sentiment is computer generated.

Toonie Tuesday - Dirty Dozen Valentine Challenge

Dirty Dozen Challenge - Holiday Wrap!

What a fun challenge Jami issued to all the Dirty Dozen current and almuni girls....

This month it was A Christmas/Hanukah/or Winter Card inspired by a childhood holiday memory or favorite thing about the season. Tell us about the memory or inspiration in your gallery description

Required Element: Wrapping paper. Use a piece of holiday wrapping paper on your card in some way.

Restricted Element: No snowflake stamps, papers or embellishments.

Well, as soon as I saw the challenge I knew exactly what I would do. In fact when I first saw this All That Glitters set from Flourishes, I HAD to have it because of this very Christmas memory!

Setting up the Christmas tree was something we really looked forward to as kids. My mom had sets upon sets of old-fashioned ornaments. But one in particular was very special. It was a glass bird, just like in the Flourishes set, with a feathery tail and it had a springy grabber to attach to the tree. It was silver and blue and my brother and I would fight over who would get to put it up each year....I considered it *mine* (LOL) and I'd sneak into the ornaments and make sure I got to put it on the tree each year. It was so beautiful and there was something so special about it to me, I wish mom still had it, but sadly one year it broke.

So this card is a reminder of that Christmas tradition for me.

I embossed my little bird in silver onto watercolor paper and then used the Zig Painty to color in other parts of the bird in silver as well. Then I watercolored the rest. I put him onto some tree branches stamped in White Craft mixed with a little green ink, and added silver Zig painty to highlight it as well, and trimmed it out.

I found the wrapping paper a few weeks ago and thought it was perfect...silvery and blue and tree branches....and no snow! I cut it out with the Top Note and also added silvery branches with an Encore pad on the main card base.


If only I could find another bird like that for my tree!

My Blog Candy Alert HERE, and here's what I'm grateful for today: My marriage - it's a precious and wonderful thing, and I don't take it for granted. My husband is such a good man. He's so good to me. We have so much fun together, we laugh together, and he's so supportive of me. He's walked through really difficult times right beside me with compassion and love. He is my stability when life gets rocky, and he can fix anything, find anything, cook and he's learning how to stamp too (here's his gallery!) . I am beyond blessed that God has given me him. 14 years sweetie!

Dirty Dozen Challenge - Holiday Wrap!

Dirty Dozen Challenge - Thankful Hearts

Just a week from now is American Thanksgiving. With my husband and kids being dualies, we often still celebrate both Thanksgivings (yum extra mashed potatoes!). But this month's Dirty Dozen (present and alumni) challenge is a focus on Thanksgiving or Thankful projects. No restricted items....required element a heart! Be sure to check out the other DD girls projects at Splitcoast here , or by searching DCTH1108.



So I created a thank-you card for our Piano teacher. I am so grateful for her. She's just FUN, and creative and talented. She's the kind of woman that teaches the kids how to write their own music, has the kids put on a full costumed production in a theatre downtown every other year, has prizes and great music selection for them. They are learning so much. And love it enough that they practise and just play on their own for fun, just because they are learning and enjoying it.


So...seeing as one of the periods she is teaching the kids about in Piano is Baroque...here is my Baroque Copper Gratitude card for her.




It's good sometimes to get out the retired items isn't it? I found these gorgeous papers again when I was cleaning my stamp closet (I have like 3 packs!). I like them because the are definitely elegant and have almost a Christmasy feel too. All the layers are well sponged. Sponging is such an easy thing...and it always gives a richer effect to your paper.


I embossed the medallion swirls from Kind Thoughts in Copper on River Rock, trimming it out carefully and adding accent and color with my SW Markers. I took an old heart charm that was silver and inked it with VersaMark and dipped it in the Copper Embossing Powder to change it's color. I wanted to keep it a little vintage so I left a little of the silver showing in spots. Be careful if you ever do this, use the graspy prongy things (wow I'm so technical) from the tool kit and don't touch it after it's heated...it's hot! (there that's my legal disclaimer).




I also heat set the organdy ribbon a little to give it that curly look.

Dirty Dozen Challenge - Thankful Hearts

Where Did all the Layers Go Dirty Girls?

That sounds like such a funny title when I read it! Each month on the 20th the Dirty Dozen and Dirty Dozen Alumni girls at SCS are invited to participate in a challenge. This month's theme is Where Did All the Layers Go? We were to create a no layer card of any size - but the card base is the only cardstock you can use. Required Element: There has to be some element of masking on your card. Restricted Element: No Pink.


So here is my submission for our challenge today. I find no layer cards to be extremely challenging. I'm just not a Clean and Simple kind of girl....I like the look of CAS, and I so appreciate those designers that can create a stunning look without layers....but I'm not one of them!


But I had an idea pop into my head, and when Jami issues a challenge you just have to play, that's what a challenge is for right? To stretch you!




On this base of Whisper White Cardstock (it really is white...not pink - honest!) I masked an open large rectangle with large Post-It notes. (I cut a rectangle out of the center of the Post-It note and stuck it to the card). I also cut out a Word Window Punch piece of Post-It note and placed that in the lower right as a 2nd mask. Then I took my new Winter Post snowflake and with VersaMark stamped all over the open masked area and over top of the masked Word Window punch area. Then I carefully took off the masks and embossed with Irridescent Ice EP for some really pretty sparkle (but it's really difficult to photograph, especially because it's white on white). Imagine really sparkly and shimmery. And the card isn't bent as it might appear...it's just the shadow of the ribbon behind the card.


This left me with a *window* mask to stamp the sentiment in from Warm Words in Riding Hood Red. I added the gorgeous new Riding Hood Red striped ribbon from the Winter Mini (it has really nice texture and softness), added scoring lines on the opposite set to mimic the striped feel and some piercing to frame it. Here you can see the white and detail a little more closely. Hmm, now that I think about it, I really seem to be on a Red kick lately.

This rose is from one of my graduated girls, she wanted to give it to me to encourage me. She is the most thoughtful and rare young woman. And she's getting married to one of our graduated guys in less that a month...our first youth kids to get married. This rose is one of the most perfect ones I've ever seen and it opened so beautifully!

And here are are Strawberries from our backyard. I picked them last night and honestly the kids and I ate the whole bowl within a few minutes! The are SO sweet. They are everbearing so they don't ever get really large....but oh the yummy taste!

DD/DDA August Challenge - What's In a Number?

Here we are at the 20th of August, can you believe it? Well, it's time for another Dirty Dozen Girl and Alumni Challenge. This months' Dirty Dozen Challenge was issued to us from Jen Del Munro to create a Birthday card but without the word Birthday and using numbers. I really wasn't sure that I'd even be able to get the challenge done, but it's my brother's birthday on Sunday (can you guess how old he'll be????) so it fit well with the challenge. I was racking my brain trying to figure out how I'd use numbers since I have no chipboard numbers, didn't think I had any stamped numbers....and then I remembered this old SU DSP and my old Bold Alpha numbers, so I hunted them down and then chose my color palette from there. Retired True Thyme, Vanilla, and Bravo Burgundy.

I chose the rounded square shape based on the sentiment stamp, (card is 5.5 x 5.5) and added Crystal Effects to the DSP to make the numbers pop. The ribbon gave me the dotted theme and piercing and the brads pulled it together.
