I have missed playing in the color challenges at SCS the past weeks.  It just seems my Tuesdays don't allow me to stamp for fun all the time.   So, it's pretty late in the afternoon, but I had a chance to bring out some new SU stamps and my watercolor brush that I haven't used in a long time for today's colors, they are Basic Grey, Rose Red and Daffodil Delight.

I fell in love with this set from the first time I saw it, the clean lines of these flowers are just so pretty.  The set is called Every Moment, and actually everything on here is SU.  I used the Big Shot and scalloped circles Bigz die to cut out the watercolor paper and then stamped two flowers on it, stamping a 3rd flower on more watercolor paper so that I could cut it out and pop it up.  I also sponged the scallop after coloring to give it that gray haze.

I rounded the bottom corners and also added scallops with my corner rounder to the grey strip on the right to pair with the scallops on the main image.  I used the new Elegant Lines Textured Impressions folder as well.

Greenhouse Butterfly

How about a little Stampin' Up! Only card?  It's been a long time since I've done that.

I ordered this gorgeous butterfly (All A Flutter) from the Summer Mini catalogue, and then got so busy that I didn't have time to use it.  I really like detailed butterflies that you can color.

I used this weeks fun Mojo Sketch - round or square - and chose the square flipped

I'll be honest....I'm still not sure about this card.  I think it's because it combines so many colors.  I don't have the new Daffodil yellow from SU yet so I had to substitute with Saffron, and I never like it when things aren't perfectly matched!  I used a Hostess set from last year, Kind and Caring Thoughts for the greenery, but once I stamped it in Pear Pizzazz and then paired it with the finely detailed butterfly, it just didn't look right, so I came back and added some detail with my fine tip on my Chocolate Chip marker and I think that helped.  

All stamped on watercolor paper with the butterfly popped up.  I added a wash of Baja for the sky and then stamped the leaves.

Greenhouse Butterfly

We had a busy but fun weekend so far.  Our middle son had his friend party for his 11th birthday.  We did an ice-skating and swimming party at a great facility near us.  Last time we did a party like this for our daughter a year and a half ago I think, our youngest son (then probably 5 years old) tried ice skating for the first time and he did not like it.  He adamantly said "NO I'm not doing it anymore"  It was a bit of an episode actually.  He was so afraid and just couldn't get his balance.  But now he's six and he said today he'd try again and with a happy heart he did great.  I always delight in seeing the kids keep trying at something and then succeed. 

So here were the party invites: 

I mixed the wheel from the old pirate set rolled in White Craft ink and then added the whale from the Animal Stories set.  Makes a cute combination for a water related party.  And red is his favourite color.  I added a wavy trim with this Wavy Dotted border punch too.  Super simple.  It's a front fold, and the party details were inside.

Our middle son also went to another BDay party on Friday for one of his really good friends from school.  She's lived across this street since we moved here and they love to play street hockey or bike or jump on the trampoline together.  She's a great fun girl.  So here was her birthday card.  I made it the other night with my SU demonstrator Susan. So it's totally her design :)

Don't you love the tiger striped ice cream and the waffle cone embossed layer?  All items from the Summer mini catalogue.  Way cute I think. 

So - sweet and quick :)  It's a sleepover here tonight with some of the boys from church who came to the party.  I know they've got to be exhausted.  A ball-hockey game in the morning, ice-skating and swimming, then jumping on the trampoline and playing road hockey at home.  Think I'll get them to bed????

Kid Friendly

Every Step of the Way

Hi Everyone!

Hope you all had a wonderful Easter.  We took the opportunity with Spring Break and Easter to go to visit my husband's family in the US.  2800 + km, and about 36 hours of driving.  But it was a good trip and I feel blessed that we were able to do it.  We were able to meet our new nephew, and for the kids - their new cousin Gideon for the first time.  He's just 4 months now and we got in lots of cuddles and holding time with him, he is precious.  Our kids just love being with their cousins and seeing Grandma and Grandpa. 

A highlight for me was our youngest son learning how to ride his 2 wheeler.  Last summer we tried to teach him, but he just couldn't grasp the balance and emphatically told us, "NOPE, no more, I'm done trying".  So we left it till this spring.  My delight was seeing him grab hold of it in one day and now we have another little bike rider.  He just LOVED finally being able to ride with his brother and cousins.  The wonderful thing is that my husband's home town is so small probably about 300 people that the streets are quiet and the kids can play anywhere they want.

Here's my little guy in action. 

We had a blizzard while we were there, a 6 hour power outage, rain, sunshine, lots of games, Easter Egg decorating and Easter Egg Hunts.  All very exciting for 8 kids under 13 years old.   

So now we're home and my allergies have kicked in full force.  I don't know if I've ever had them like this - I honestly think I used an entire box of Kleenex yesterday. 

I tried today to get back in the swing of things creating, so I made a card with yesterday's Color Challenge at SCS, Soft Suede, Tempting Turquoise and Certainly Celery, and today's Sketch Challenge as well.

I'll admit, my watercoloring is a little rough here.  My waterbrush was a tad too damp and these are really tiny images.  But aren't they cute?  I added some grass to ground the images, and I tried to replicate the flag in the sentiment too, and added some sewing to border the patterned paper pieces.

Every Step of the Way

Be Happy Boy

Both our sons had birthday parties to go to this weekend.  For one I had a card on hand, but for the other I had to do a quick card....so here it is.  Super simple, great for an 11 year old boy.

I took the Extreme Dirtbike set and did the dragging technique on it to give it the look of motion in black ink (looking at the catalogue I see he's supposed to be upside-down...oh well, I'll pretend he's just coming out of his crazy move!).  I added photo corners and some large brads for that "motor-cycle" look.  I used the rough texture wheel in Artichoke on the make card sort of a tire-tracks look.  A bit of ribbon and some piercing...that's all, not even patterned paper!  Great when you need a really quick card.  :) 

It's spring break for us here, so I'll be spending the week with my family.  Look for me again on the weekend with something creative to show you!

Be Happy Boy

One Style - Two Designs

Busy couple of days around here, and not too much time for stamping! 

On Tuesday night I hosted our long running SU 10 for 10 group, and we did a great card designed by my upline.  It has a really great youthful, masculine, grungy sort of look.  I just loved it's style so much I recreated the style with a different feel. 

Here's the card we did with Susan my SU demo...

Isn't it cool?  What I really love about it are the side triangles popped up, yet still part of the base card design.  And don't you love the dragging technique on the skater?  It was fun to do.

So I took this style and gave it a completely different look with a brand new released set from Our Daily Bread Designs.  These March sets are just STUNNING, and mine just arrived.  This one is called The Lord has Risen.

I stamped the side trianges in Memento Tuxedo Black ink with the violet stamp so I could color it in, and then added the verse in Melon Mambo ink.  I sponged the triangles heavily with Always Apricot and lightly with Melon Mambo.  I wanted it to look like a real flower garden.  On the apricot panel I stamped the violets in Apricot and added some sponging and separated the verse into two sections.

I also tooked some cream looped ribbon and colored with both the apricot shade and the deep pink shade to tie it all in.  I also jazzed up the triangles by adding the pinked hearts punch and I like how it sets them off. 

So - two designs with the same style of card!

One Style - Two Designs

An Olympic Bouquet

Oh did you watch the Ice Dance at the Olympics last night?! Woo Hoo Canada!  I was so thrilled to see how flawless Moir and Virtue's performance was.  And to see the joy in their faces as the youngest and first North Americans to win a medal in Ice Dance was a great experience.  I really love the artistry of Ice Dance.

So Betty had a fun and fitting color challenge today at SCS.  Today she showed the Vancouver Inukshuk in the Olympic colors and told us to go from there!  Any combination of those colors. 

So I chose to combine four of the colors, the deep blue (Buckaroo Blue), the lighter blue (Bordering Blue), a yellow (So Saffron) and a green (Garden Green). 

I really wanted to mirror their performance costumes of last night, they had a lot of white and sparkle.  With white, which I don't use in abundance usually - I find that if you add texture it really gives it a greater impact so I used 2 embossing folders and then my Scor It for the vertical lines in the background layer. 

For the sparkle - to match their outfits, I used a strip of Sticky Strip and Microbeads and Dazzling Diamonds to weight the bottom a little better and then added some sparkle and microbeads to the flower centers too.

An Olympic Bouquet

Spring Birds

Well the weather yesterday made me think of spring, as soon as that thermometer gets above freezing, I get that anticipation, longing for spring. 

Tonight I'll be swapping with my 10 for 10 friends so I put together some spring-like cards and colors for them. 

I pulled out some old In Colors for this set.  Wild Wasabi and Soft Sky.  This Spring Silhouette SU patterned paper was one of my favourites when it was in the catalogue, so elegant, with a real romantic feel.

Quite simple cards, I'm on a CAS kick I guess!  I stamped the damask from this set on the background of the card, stamped the bird twice and cut out and popped up the soft sky bird, and added simple accents with the Soft Sky Ribbon and these old Vintage brads. 

Back again tomorrow, one of my favourite times of the month!   Flourishes New Releases!

Spring Birds

Bella Thank You's

In the 10 for 10 that I've been a part of for the past 7 years or so, one of our members lost her husband this past Christmas season.  My heart goes out to her.  As a group we decided to make her bundles of cards so that after the funeral she can send thank-you's out to others if she needs to. 

I wanted these to be simple, and yet classic.  The CAS Challenge at SCS today is to have something "cut out" on your design, and I had an idea right away.

I think this stamp set gives that really dramatic statement, but is so elegant at the same time.  I stamped the flower in Barely Banana and Certainly Celery.  I used an "out of the box" cut on the right hand side for some added interest.  Then I stamed the center of the flower again, cut it out and then sponged it with Apricot Appeal, then added it with a dimensional. 

I don't usually do pastels, but I thought the yellows were great for the flower, and hopeful feeling.  Here's another look at the dimension. 

Sorry for the slightly dark photos, it's nice and warm here today, but totally cloudy, so my OTT light had to do.  I sponged the outside of the card layer to give it depth.  So, simple, but I think classic.  Thanks for stopping by, I'll be back tomorrow, hope you will too!  :)

Christmas Blog Candy and 101 Pea Pods

How about some Christmas Blog Candy???   ...well you'll have to read to the end of the post :)

This is what I've been working on  - for it seems like forever!  Birth Announcements for our sweet new nephew.  My husband's brother and sister in law had their 5th baby!  And we're so happy it's a boy :)  Anyway....she requested 150 birth announcements...I asked her if 100 would be ok, especially since I couldn't color the peas until I knew if it was a girl or boy. 

I'll admit mass assembly is not my favourite thing to do, BUT, it was for a special little someone. 

Here's a picture of the pieces :)

They needed to be simple, so I could make this many of them, and still pretty flat so they were mailable. 

The pea pods are copic colored and the designer paper is American Crafts.  I almost think I like the white ones better, though I only added them because I ran out of Old Olive!  Stamps are SU Event Full and Teeny Tiny Wishes, plus the smallest circle from an old SU snow man set (an "O" is also our last name initial - theirs too :)  and the little tiny smiley face in the background is an old SU set Small Sayings - I thought the smiley face matched the peas so well).

Christmas Blog Candy and 101 Pea Pods

Christmas Trees and Baskets

Well we are almost done our Christmas shopping, picked up a few more things today.  I think I just have stocking stuffers to do...and my brother.  He's the hardest one to buy for and right now I haven't got a clue what to get!  ....oh but I found the CUTEST gifts for his daughter...our niece :)

I had some time before we left shopping this morning to actually participate in the Color Challenge...and I'll show you a card I finished the other day too...just some last minute Christmas cards.

It's an all SU card, I used today's color challenge colors of Mellow Moss, So Saffron and Melon Mambo.  I thought it had a pretty and fresh look....and then realized that these colors together would make great Northern Lights in the background.  We can see amazing displays of Northern Lights at times here. 

The trees are embossed, and I used the Paisley Texturz plate to created the embossing behind the trees, then colored it in swirls with chalks.  I added sparkly snow, but I'm not thrilled with how it turned out and I think I'll have be redoing that part. 

Then the other day I pulled out this very fun Vintage Picnic set from PTI and colored up a Basket of Christmas with my Copic markers. 

I also used the Giga Guide Lines to create the white "snowflakes" on the Kraft layer. I added a very wild bow :)  Felt ribbon, a button and twine. 

Now just to get all these cards in the mail!  Hope your Christmas preparations are going well!

Christmas Trees and Baskets

Quick Country Christmas

Last night we set up our Christmas tree and decorations.  It's always a highlight for our kids, they never get over that magical feeling of joy (which I hope stays!)...they love to open all the special ornaments we've bought over the years symbolizing different trips or events and remember together. 

Later as I was getting ready to write the Christmas letter, and getting my Christmas card list ready, I started counting the cards I've made.  I like to do my cards one by one, with each unique, and since I started in September I think, I thought I'd have plenty.  Nope, about 20 short.  Yikes!  Especially since I wanted to get them mailed this week. 

So today I tried to whip up a bunch.  Anyone in need of some quick cards too?   I thought the CAS Challenge at SCS would be a good jumping off point.  The challenge was for Brown, Red and a neutral cards.   Here are the eight cards I was able to do.

I used Soft Suede, Kraft and Real Red, combined with SU's Christmas Cocoa paper and set Serene Snowflakes. 

Really these are super simple cards.  I used the Movers and Shapers Bigz Die with the moveable pieces to create the Modern Label punch window.  The flocked paper is gorgeous because of it's texture, and I added the Sizzlit snowflake and button with the ribbon for accent.  Helps me get rid of my HORDE of buttons.  Plus they're not too bulky to mail.

Alrighty!  Hopefully I'll get a bunch more done tomorrow!

Quick Country Christmas

Well we had a really busy day Tuesday, it's our day off and we got some errands done.  We went Ikea (more on that later) and to our Christian Book Store because one of our favourite groups Casting Crowns had a new CD out yesterday.  We are huge Casting Crowns fans.  While at the bookstore we found some AMAZING sales and we stocked up on some Christmas presents for our kids, our nieces and nephew and other family.  Love it when that happens.  I'm such a book lover and my kids are too, so it's never hard to find something to give to read. 

Anyway, I have a cute card to show you today that's just right for a sweet little gift for those cozy, crisp days of winter.  Again, my SU Demo Susan designed it, but it was just so cute that I had to share it with you.

What I love about this cute snowman/marshmallow face  is that he has an inside pocket when you open the card just the right size for a packet of hot chocolate.  You can just see the brad holding the pocket together.  I tried to take a picture of the inside too, but it was so blurry it just wouldn't work.  But trust me, the hot chocolate is in there :)

Now how about what I found at Ikea?  Well, I just got some more Copics from Flourishes the other day and had some issues.  I had no more space!  When I first started getting Copic Markers I bought 2 Copic Binder/Folders, I assured the store owner I'd "never fill them" HA!  I counted again today and I have 137 Copic Markers and 12 atyou Spica pens.  There was no more room in the inn, so I took them all out of the binders and color sorted them and put them in elastics see....

But that's not a very efficent way to store or use them.  So at Ikea today I went looking around for some ideas and found this cool CD storage case that doesn't have any lid.  It's just the right size for markers!  And inexpensive too, $9, and it's quite study.

And I still have room for some more in there.  Once that's filled I think I'll quit...maybe. 

What I love about it is that it can sit out on my table when I'm coloring and everything is easily accessible, and then it's easily put away in my shelf.

Pretty Packaging - A Creative Photo Card

Hello everyone!  Hope you're enjoying this new week.  We have unseasonably warm temperatures right now...but we saw a bunny tonight sporting all-white fur...so we're thinking that snow won't be too far away. (sob!) 

Speaking of those icy temperatures coming.  I have a pretty Stair Stepper Card to show you that also doubles as a great photo card.  This project was designed by my SU Demo Susan, so I can't take credit for the design, just the stamping (wink!)

What I really like about this project is that it combines a number of techniques, the Stair Step fold, the mirror image technique and a picture, so it would be perfect for those special people that you want to send a special Christmas picture to.  Now ideally it would be a cozy outdoor picture in the snow (didn't have any snow), or in front of the fire place or the Christmas Tree (not up yet)....so you'll just have to do with this picture of my trio on the first day of school this year. 

Here's a closer picture of the mirroring.  We used acetate to do the double image. And the blue sponging leaving the middle unsponged really gives it a lovely glow. 

And the great news, it still fits in an A2 envelope!

Pretty Packaging - A Creative Photo Card

Pretty Packaging Series

Hi Stamping Friends,

I didn't fall off the face of the earth :) 

Just took a blogging/stamping break for a couple of weeks.  Sometimes I just need that to get restored.  I really wanted to get some things done around the house too and I find myself too divided sometimes if I'm so focussed on stamping.  So...a break is a good thing.  Though I didn't get as much done on the home project level as I wanted to, it was a restorative couple of weeks for me.

I turned another year older, celebrated my mom's birthday with her, did some painting and organizing, got closer to finishing up a couple of knitting projects, got the family immunized for H1N1 (which I'm so grateful for - so many people I know are sick), just sat to watch movies with the kids....the list goes on :)

But I'm back and I have some wonderful things planned for you for the next couple of weeks.  I decided I'm going to focus on something we all need in the weeks ahead.  Did you know that Christmas Eve is only 49 days away?  Wowzers!  I really want this to be the year where all my shopping is done in November!

I really do enjoy giving homemade things to friends and family.  So...over these next weeks you'll see projects most every day based on either gift ideas, or Pretty Packaging ideas.  Sometimes a simple gift is made all the more special just by some pretty packaging. Some will be simple, some will be more elaborate. 

So, today's project is a simple one.  Our daughter made 8 dozen cookies a few weeks ago because we wanted to give some away to teachers etc.  (Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip and Oatmeal Scotchies). So, I wanted to package them up in a pretty way and say thank you for all they do in working with our kids each day. 

I took the cookies and wrapped them in cello bags.  I wanted them to have an Autumn/Thanksgiving feel to them, but I wanted to keep them really simple. 

I love the sentiment on this set from SU a quote from Emerson, and I think it's perfect for a teacher...

"The greatest gift is a portion of thyself. "

Very simple embellisments, felt ribbon, copper brads, and twine to tie it all together. 

Back Friday with something elegant.  My mom requested a gift for a 90 year old lady she knows, so I wanted to make something lovely!

Our daughter's birthday is tomorrow and this past weekend we worked on her invitations for a party with her friends next weekend.  It was fun to design together.  She liked the idea of an embossing folder, we picked the colors together and planned out the layout, and then I put her to work!  She really did all the parts to the card.  So...this is really her craftsmanship here :)

We wanted a clean and simple design that could easily be done for a number of girls.  She did all the stamping and cutting out of the flowers, popping them up on the embossed layer and adding a simply sentiment.  I think they turned out really sweet!

So...sweet and simple for today!  Back tomorrow with something I made for her Birthday!

Simply Inviting

Whoos 6?

Happy World Card Making Day!  How great is it that we can have a day to celebrate this wonderful craft! 

I'll have two posts for you today, one later with the Flourishes WCMD Challenge on SCS and this first one, a card I had to make this morning for our 6 year old son's friend's Birthday Party.  Whew that's a mouthful.  It needed to be a quick card.  It's loosely based on Beate's 100th Weekend Sketch, but the 6 is really much larger than what she designed as the sketch.  It's a 4.25 x 4.25 inch card. 

Fun hey?  So not my style, but it's always good to stretch.  I took out my chipboard that I so rarely use, and found this massive number!  (LOL), I inked it with Night of Navy Craft and clear embossed it, then added polka-dots to match the owl from Animal Stories with my white gel pen. 

What is hard to see is that I used the Textures plate in the "bark" style on the white and then stamped the letters around the 6.  Super simple but kinda fun! 

Back here about 5 pm MTN time for the Flourishes Challenge, it's a GREAT one!

Whoos 6?

Charming Razzleberries

Ah its the beginning of fall, and amazing to me I sent my kids to school today in shorts again.  It's supposed to be 28 degrees C here again today, somewhere in the 80's for my American friends.  I'm going to relish every second of it, because soon it won't be shorts we're wearing!

I was without internet for a couple of days this weekend.  Our wireless modem went crazy and kept rebooting itself every 30 seconds - 1 minute.  You really can't get much done in 30 seconds!  But, they replaced it and now I'm back in my little cyber world. 

Today's color challenge at SCS is a really rich one.  Crushed Curry, Basic Black and Rich Razzleberry.  I like deep colors so much and thought this had the feel of jewels.  So I used some VersaMark and Clear Embossing Powder to create this color blocked background (Mercy's Sketch) and then used my markers on the flowers.  I stamped the "frame" to this set twice, overlapping each other to create this larger black frame for the flowers. 

Otherwise it's sweet and simple,  I even neglected to put on a sentiment.  But somehow that would have taken away from the design.  So it shall remain sentiment-aless.  :)

Pretty Whispery Suede

Today's color challenge colors over on SCS are Pretty in Pink, Whisper White and Soft Suede. I love Soft Suede, it's probably the color I've used most. I know some people aren't sure about it yet, but I love it's neutral quality that can be paired with so much.  These three colors together made me think of candy today, yum!  Especially if there's chocolate involved.   I created a sweet wintery scene with this first card:

To give this card the sparkly candy feel I added Chunky Glitter over Crystal Effects to give it some texture and sparkle.    Don't you love the embossing over the patterned paper.  It really looks pretty. 

I'm not often a button girl, but these sweet little buttons called to me.  I'm a girl who's ok with leaving a button naked (as in nothing in the holes), but I know it really weirds some people out!  So I threaded a teeny tiny sliver of whisper white paper through the holes and tied it in the back. 

I hope to have another card to add to this post later...it's in process, but I also have a Dentist appt this afternoon with the whole fam to get our toofers cleaned! 

Ok...I did have time to finish the other card before we left for the Dentist....a pretty Lacy feeling one.

I had to take the picture in goofy light, bright sunlight so it makes goofy shadows. 

I just LOVE these new wreaths from Flourishes.  I think Marcella did a wonderful job with them.  And this one had a kind of lacy organic feel.  I colored the wreath with straight Stampin' Write markers no blending.  Then I used the pinked Nestie as my template to sponge with Soft Suede. 

To keep that lacy feel I embossed the white layer with the Flourish Impressabilities and then sponged over top to sort of give it the look of lace.  Then I added the pretty Lattice Borderabilties.  And then some pretty crochet lace with pink velvet ribbon run through it.  All available from Flourishes.
